I have had issues with them getting destroyed by detonating enemy ships though. Keep them hovering behind your cruisers and usually they'll escape attention, then strike out when your cruisers turn to present their broadsides. I do love my swords, I love slipping them past an enemy cruiser, turning hard and pummelling it from point blank range astern. Why are you not having any attack craft carriers in your fleet? These would help address some of the problems caused by not having escorts. Against a skilled player, however, you'll find it difficult. So all in all, you should be able to put up a decent fight without escorts, especially against less skilled opponents. If it's a good one and/or your opponent doesn't react right you'll smash the enemy, if not, you'll find your fleet out of position or in disarray. You may find yourself limited to picking a battle line and course and having to stick it through. You'll also have trouble against opponents using spatial phenomena (like asteroid fields) cleverly, or those tricksy eldar. ![]() While they're only 105 points, a squadron of swords with 12 firepower is not something you want under 15cm away to your stern. ![]() You won't be able to chase down damaged ships, or stick an escort squadron on the tail of an enemy capital ship. Just as importantly, you'll lack the aggressive abilities of escorts. Your opponent will find it easier to outmanoeuvre your ships - you'll always be able to turn to get a fire arc on them, but not necessarily without mucking up your formation and plans. The downsides are lacking the flexibility and opportunities that escorts give. A battle line of cruisers on lock-on is a scary prospect for any opponent. Attack craft and torpedoes actually aren't always as good stand-off weapons as they seem, because they can be destroyed by direct fire while they close on their targets. Particularly at long range, where it's harder to do heavy damage you'll come off better - this might work particularly well with the chaos fleet. An all capital ship force can be a scary prospect, because your opponent has to mass fire to damage any of the ships. And escorts as defence against attack craft and torpedoes aren't really all that great. Two hits a turn won't scratch a cruiser but will kill escorts.
